Therapy insurance coverage refers to the mental health services and costs a health plan may pay for under its terms. Coverage can depend on the specific plan, the type of therapy, provider network status, medical-necessity or authorization rules, deductibles, coinsurance, and other limits.
A plan that covers therapy does not necessarily cover every therapist or pay the full session fee. In-network and out-of-network benefits can work differently, and some plans offer limited or no out-of-network reimbursement. Before beginning treatment, ask the insurer whether outpatient psychotherapy is covered, whether out-of-network benefits apply, what costs the member may owe, and what documentation or authorization is required. See Deputy Care’s guide to whether therapy is covered by insurance.
