Out-of-Network Reimbursement

Out-of-network reimbursement is the amount an insurance plan pays toward eligible care received from a provider outside its contracted network. In therapy, the client may pay the therapist directly, submit a superbill or claim documentation, and receive reimbursement if the plan covers the service and the claim is approved.

The amount is not necessarily a percentage of the therapist’s full fee. The insurer may calculate benefits using an allowed amount and apply the member’s remaining deductible, coinsurance, and other plan rules. Reimbursement timing also varies by insurer and claim completeness. To understand the likely process, verify benefits in advance and keep copies of the submission and EOB.
